Mode of action of NPWT in closed surgical incision
It is widely accepted that NPWT improves wound management via multiple modes of action (MOA) based on in vitro and animal studies.
The MOA is dependent on whether it relates to chronic wound management or for closed surgical incision management.
By understanding the mode of action in closed incision, you can understand that NPWT can improve the speed, strength & quality of incisional wound healing by minimising the failures of healing that lead to infection and dehiscence and other SSCs compared to standard care.
In this module we see one of the foremost experts on NPWT mode of action summarise the topic. Further studies that are important to NPWT mode of action and those related to PICO◊ sNPWT are described.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the mode of action of NPWT in closed surgical incision as this helps to understand how it works
- A discussion of the mode of action of NPWT in relation to lymphatic drainage
- Justify the use of PICO sNPWT by introducing mode of action data and impact on clinical outcomes
