Jacob Calcei, MD

Jacob G. Calcei, MD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine physician and shoulder surgeon at University Hospitals and an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He specializes in the treatment of acute injuries and chronic conditions of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle.

As an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Calcei teaches and mentors medical students, residents and fellows. He has authored a number of peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters and has research interests in cartilage preservation and restoration and the use of biologics in treating sports medicine injuries and early arthritis. He also has a particular interest in injury prevention and finding ways that we can make sports safer while optimizing athlete performance.

Dr. Calcei graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Kenyon College where he was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Baseball Team player. He went on to earn his medical doctorate with honors in orthopedic surgery and cell biology from New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Calcei completed his orthopedic surgery residency training at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, the #1 ranked orthopedic surgery hospital and residency program in the country. He then traveled to northern California for a fellowship in sports medicine orthopedic surgery at Stanford University. Dr. Calcei has served as a team physician at all levels of competition. Throughout his training, he served as a team physician for FDNY Bravest Football and Curtis and Lafayette High Schools in New York City, Sacred Heart Schools in Atherton, Stanford University athletics and the NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers.

A member of multiple national and international medical societies, Dr. Calcei serves on committees for the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS). He was awarded the first annual ASES Mark Frankle, MD, Health Care Policy Award. For his work as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Political Action Committee resident fellow, he was inducted into the AAOS Orthopaedic Political Action Committee Hall of Fame.

Michael O'Brien, MD

Dr. Michael J. O’Brien is a Board Certified orthopaedic surgeon, fellowship-trained to specialize in shoulder & elbow surgery and internationally recognized as an expert in the field of shoulder and elbow diagnosis, treatment and surgery. Dr. O’Brien is the Chief of Shoulder and Elbow services and Orthopaedics Residency Director at Tulane University. He joined the Tulane Department of Orthopaedics in 2009, after completing his orthopaedic residency at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, MD, and Shoulder & Elbow fellowship at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. O’Brien has an active clinical practice and is involved in many ongoing research projects designed to advance the field of orthopaedics. In 2016, the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) selected him to join their Traveling Fellowship, a focused and select opportunity to train with some of AANA’s greatest surgeons; and in 2018, Dr. O’Brien was invited to join the Association of Clinical Elbow and Shoulder Surgeons, an exclusive invite-only organization of fellowship-trained elbow and shoulder surgeons in North America, as its first and only member from Louisiana. Dr. O’Brien is one of only four Louisiana surgeons elected as an Active Member of the American Shoulder & Elbow Surgeons (ASES), an international society of leading orthopaedic surgeons who specialize in surgery of the shoulder and elbow. He has been selected annually by his peers as a Top Doctor in Orthopaedics in the Greater New Orleans area and in the State of Louisiana. He regularly lectures and teaches courses internationally and throughout the United States, and has published hundreds of articles on topics such as shoulder and elbow reconstructive surgery, arthroscopy of the shoulder and elbow, rotator cuff surgery, shoulder instability, total shoulder replacement, reverse shoulder replacement, total elbow replacement, ligament reconstruction and meniscus surgery of the knee, fracture care in both adults and children, and ortho biologics (including donor cartilage and collagen implants.)

Dr. O’Brien is currently Chair of the AANA Fellowship Committee, Co-Chair of the ASES Residency Course, a supervising physician for the Mississippi Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Center sports medicine fellowship program, and immediate past President of the Greater New Orleans Orthopaedic Society. He serves on the Editorial Board for the Arthroscopy Journal, and on the Board of Trustees of the Southern Orthopaedic Association. Dr. O’Brien is a current team physician for Tulane Athletics, NOLA Gold Rugby and Brother Martin High School.

Miguel Ruiz Ibán, MD, PhD

Dr Miguel A. Ruiz Ibán is currently the Head of the Shoulder and Elbow Unit in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology in Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal, in Madrid, Spain. He received his medical degree in Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and completed the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Programme at the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal.

He completed his PhD, focused in the biomechanics of the lower lumbar spine and pelvis, at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, Madrid. He also obtained a Master’s degree in Clinical Management of Specialist Care Units at the European Institute of Health and Social Wellbeing. He is an active ESSKA member since 2010.

Dr Ruiz Ibán has lectured extensively at national and international meetings. He has authored numerous books, chapters and abstracts. He has published more than 50 papers in indexed, international peer reviewed journals, including Arthroscopy, American Journal of Sports Medicine, KSSTA, Clinical Drug Investigation, Orthopedics and others.
